ON SEPARATING FROM THE NEW SCHOOL BAPTISTS

PLEA FOR NEW INVENTIONS IN RELIGIOUS PRACTICES

The desire in men to innovate is wonderful, except in spiritual matters where God has told us how we are to do things in His church.  This fact, however, has not stopped men from trying new things in the belief that what they DO, will bring about the salvation of people, who, otherwise would have gone to hell. - ed.

"...THEY WOULD SCARCELY BE MISSED..."

This is what is still said today by Old School Baptists. But missed by whom? Certainly not by Christ, for we are in his bosom - ed.

THE PROPAGANDA MACHINE GOES ON: DANIEL DODGE (1775-1851)

We find this statement from the Particular Baptist Press in a release for a new biography:

Pirate captive, itinerant minister, delegate to the newly formed Triennial Convention, hymnal author, inaugural president of the New Jersey Baptist State Convention, a participant in the Sabbath Day Mail Controversy, and co-participant in the founding of the American and Foreign Bible Society. So reads the resume of Daniel Dodge (1775-1851), a key Baptist figure in early nineteenth-century America. We invite you to read about the life and work of a tireless pastor and statesman whose ministry significantly contributed to the Baptist work of that era, and whose influence continued to be felt many years later through the activities of the institutions in which he served. --Jeffrey A. Waldrop

Mr. Waldrop gives us a hagiography of Daniel Dodge.  But is the whole picture of the man?  Hardly.

THE UNDERLYING MECHANISM OF SO-CALLED BENEVOLENT INSTITUTIONS

Deerpark, N.Y. September 25, 1835

Mr. Beebe: Having enjoyed the privilege of hearing the sentiments of different denominations developed by their orators or priests, and having compared the same with that perfect standard and arbiter of their respective claims, the Bible, by which they must be finally condemned or acquitted for their errors and departures in doctrine, ordinances, faith and practice; it appears, notwithstanding their different names and non-essentials, they mutually agree in nullifying the Scriptures of Divine Truth; in handling the word of God deceitfully;  daubing with untempered mortar and healing the wounds of Zion slightly; in tergiversation and double dealing in publishing formularies and confessions of faith contrary to their stated ministrations; in garberling, in their sermons & exhortations, that part of holy writ which treats of the sovereignty of God in the salvation of his people from their sins by grace, through faith; not of themselves - not of an arm of flesh, but in the sovereign irresistible, eternal and unconditional purpose of God in the election of his people in Christ from before the foundation of the world, and absolutely predestinating all things in conformity thereto, and working all things after the counsel of his own will for his own glory, which he will in no wise give to another.  Making all things for himself yea, the wicked for the day of evil; causing their wrath to praise him and restraining the remainder; leading his people in a way which they knew not; nay, more, making them willing in the day of his power - yea, willing without anxious benches.

AGAINST ARMINIANISM AND IN DEFENSE OF ELDER POLKINHORN'S LETTER

ELDER CHARLES POLKINGHORN'S TRIP TO FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF S.C.

Dear Brother Beebe, I little thought twelve months ago that I should ever communicate with you again on this side of the grave, but our heavenly Father has seen fit to continue my unprofitable life to the present with somewhat of renewed health and strength; altho' unable as yet to resume my labors in the Church over which I trust the Lord has made me an overseer.  Since my last communication I have been in several of the southern States, but unfortunately did not find any of our Old School Brethren:

LETTERS FROM THE PAST #3 - HANNAH BENJAMIN MOORE (1807-1888)

[This woman Hannah Benjamin Moore (1807-1888), espoused more sound doctrine in her letter than is contained in many sermons by Old School Baptist preachers - ed.]

CALL TO THE MINISTRY

MR. SANDS through his through his Herald has attempted a description of a call to the ministry; the concluding part only, we have read; and from the specimen which we will give, we conclude it may pass as a call to the New School ministry; but the ministers of Christ are very differently taught of the Lord. He says: “It is sometimes urged that the apostles were illiterate men. Never was a grosser error entertained. The epistles of Peter, John, James, and Jude, are standing monuments of its falsehood.” Upon the subject of ministerial qualifications, Mr. Sands is at issue with the scriptures of truth. Compare the above bold assertion with Acts iv. 13. “Now, when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceived they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled: and they took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus.”

CAESAR AND GOD

“And Jesus answering, said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” (Mark 12:17; Matthew 22:2 1; and Luke 20:25)

AND THE BEAT GOES ON

Things do not really change from their foundations.  Such is the case with the missionary societies, whether those that existed in the 19th century or their modern descendants now - money is the fuel that drives them. - ed.

BELIEVER'S LETTERS FROM THE PAST 2: AARON RICHARDSON (HEARING CHARLES G. FINNEY)

Elder Beebe: Providentially I have had an opportunity of reading a few numbers of the third vol. of the Signs of the Times, and am much pleased with their contents.  I have taken some pains to circulate them in this place, but I find, as yet, the Baptists here are too much engaged in the missionary and other benevolent institutions, so-called, to receive or patronize them to much extent.

BIBLE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS 3

"The editor of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES, the organ of the Old School Baptists, attacks in no very mild terms or gentle spirit, the recent meeting of Protestants of various denominations in Philadelphia, to oppose the attempts of the Papists of that city to banish the Bible from the common schools. He deems their proceedings fanatical, sympathizes with the Papists in their efforts to discard the bible, and if we comprehend him aright, which is sometimes a matter of difficulty, think that is not a fit book to be read in school, and that the compilations for the use of schools ought to have no religious matter in them. Well, strange things will sometimes occur. A professed Baptist joining with the Papists in preventing the use of the Bible in schools! That interdicted book tells us, in that same day Herod and Pilate were made friends." – Rel. Herald.

BEWARE OF DOGS (Beebe) 1844

So said the apostle Paul, and so says our brother of Bradford Co., Pa., whose communication will be found on the 125th page, in this number; but while it is very imprudent for children to leave the plain, straightforward path, to meddle with the ears of such surly curs as may be at strife among themselves, it is equally important that they should not be driven from a correct course by their growling or harking.

BEST WAY TO INDUCE LIBERALITY TO THE PASTORS (Beebe) 1841

BROTHER PAYTON of Indiana requested our opinion on the above subject, as will be seen by reference to his letter in our last number, page 158. Our reply was necessarily deferred until now, for want of room in the last number.

LIVING FAITH CONTRASTED WITH THAT WHICH IS DEAD (CONCLUDED)

LIVING FAITH CONTRASTED WITH THAT WHICH IS DEAD (Beebe) 1843

LIVING faith invariably proceeds from a living source, and can never emanate from the carnal mind, which is enmity against God, which is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

CONTROVERSY ON JUSTIFICATION

While we wish for a free discussion of every subject of general importance to the household of faith, we regret that our brethren differ so widely on a subject on which they are so well agreed. Unfortunately some of our correspondents either do not understand themselves, or they do not understand each other.

CONTROVERSY

There is truly a diversity of opinion among brethren on the subject of religious controversy. Some of our brethren have expressed a great aversion to the discussion of important and deep subjects, on which our corespondents do not fully agree, while others profess to be greatly edified and comforted by hearing and comparing the conflicting views of those who differ on such disputed points.
