KINGDOM OF HEAVEN TAKEN BY PRAYER 2/10 (WILLIAM HUNGINGTON)

Secondly, we repent with an evangelical repentance, that brings us towards God; not with a legal repentance only, such as Judas had, for that drives us from God. And, thirdly, we "worship God in spirit and in truth, for God seeks such worshippers to worship him," John iv. 23. To "worship God in the Spirit" shows that a man must be inspired, and approach God with a spiritual mind, with a spiritual understanding, 1 Cor. xiv. 15; with spiritual affections; and to pray as the Spirit operates on him, 2 Sam. vii. 27; and "gives him utterance," Acts ii. 4. "The words of his mouth must be the meditation of his heart," Psal. xix. 14. He must pray in spiritual faith, James, i. 6. He must plow in spiritual hope, Prov. xiii. 12. And in spiritual expectation, Hab. ii. 1. Yea, he must pray against everything of which the Spirit convinces him to be evil, 1 Cor. iv. 10.

ROMANS 13.1-2 I (GILBERT BEEBE)

This article was published in December of 1864, a time of tremendous death fighting, and suffering ed.

"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God; and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation (Romans 13:1,2)."

ROMANS 13.1 (GILBERT BEEBE)

Brother Beebe: - Please give us your views on Romans 13:1.
For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” Perhaps you have given them, but no matter. I think it is necessary that the pure minds of the readers should be stirred up by way of remembrance.

EXPERIENCE OF KATE M. BLACKWELL

Glenmore New Jersey. May 8th, 1898.

Dear Sister in Christ:

I feel my unworthiness to write to one soul rich in spiritual things, But Peter says we should at all times be ready to give the reason for the hope within us. I have never forgotten the time when you spoke so kindly to me at the association in Southampton, seven years ago, about these things, and I have Ever since felt, I would like to see you and talk with you about it.

DREAMS (REPLY TO HENRY S. STIPP)

Reply to Henry S. Stipp:

It will be seen by reference to the communication of our friend, that he requests some remarks from us and a reply to his letter. We feel willing to respond to his request, for several reasons. First, we believe from what he has written, that he is a child of God, and our brother in Christ, And we have always felt that a request from such a a one was not to be lightly passed by. Second, The Scriptures say much about the subject of dreams, and therefore they are worthy of our careful consideration. Third, Many of the people of God speak of great lessons that have been given them in dreams, And therefore they are important to them.

THE INFLUENCE OF PRAYER (ELDER FA CHICK)

“The whole value of prayer hinges on the question of whether it alters to purposes, plans, and acts of God. That it does, is taught in the Bible with the greatest possible clearness by definite statement and abundant illustration. The Bible is the most empty of all illusive dreams if God's purposes, plans, and acts are not altered by human petition”.

7,000 HAVE NOT BOWED (AB LESTER)

Dear Brethren, editors of the Signs of the Times.

I am well pleased with the plan of having the signs in pamphlet form. As you say, They can be preserved so much better, Period. Since receiving the notice, I've been trying to procure subscribers; but there are but very few in this city that have but hate the doctrine they contain. But it is not strange that the worldly religionists should hate the doctrine our Savior taught?

ROMANS 7.2 (BEEBE)

VERY DEAR AND MUCH ESTEEMED BROTHER BEEBE: - Will you please give your views, through the “Signs of the Times,” on Romans 7:2, and much oblige your brother in tribulation, if a brother at all.

THE GOSPEL (ELDER WILLIAM LIVELY)

Warwick, NY. December 6th, 1896.

Elder William Lively. Dear brother.

Do you remember the subject you took for a text the night you preached in Warwick? It was “The Gospel”. You showed that the printed word was not the gospel. But that it was Christ and Him crucified. Now, dear brother, we have a very precious, sick sister who is very anxious to have me ask you to try as nearly as you can to write what you told us that night. She was too feeble to leave her home when you were here. If you could get the time to write it, it would be a great comfort to her. I know, and we should be glad to have your letter published in the signs. All who heard you that night were fed by the precious gospel you proclaimed. My father sends love to you and dear Elder Mitchell. My father is as well as when you were here.

Hoping sincerely that the same almighty power that gave you those wonderful words of truth for us will again fill your heart so that you may be unable to repeat them on paper, I am, I hope, you're very little sister,

FORBEARANCE (ELDER BENJAMIN F. COULTER)

The relationship that all the family of Adam bears to each other in our natural life is one of dependence. We can in no sense stand alone, independent of our fellow man. In the beginning, when God created man in his own image, “male and female created he them” He gave them a law, inherent in their being and indelibly fixed, to be wrought out and manifested in their natural life. In the divine arrangement, man was made a multiple character. In order to carry out and fulfill the law of nature implanted in him. The law is as follows: “And God bless them, And God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowls of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth”. This law was primary to all laws and preceded the law or commandment that was given to Adam in the garden, and differed from it, in that the first law told him what he must DO, while the other told him what he must NOT DO.

IS UNBELIEF A CRIME? (BEEBE)

Brother Bebe. Will you be so good as to give your views on the following queries?

Is unbelief on the part of the Sinner to be considered prime? If so, is not there believing a virtue? Does it not have an awful squinting toward the Arminian system of suspending our salvation or damnation upon our receiving or rejecting the gospel?

By answering the foregoing queries, you will greatly oblige an honest Inquirer after the truth.

ROMANS 8.20 (BEEBE)

Dear Brother Beebe: Will you please give us your views on Rom. viii. 20? “For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,” particularly the him who hath subjected the same, &c. As there are various and conflicting opinions among brethren on the subject, I would be glad to see an exposition from you, if convenient, and oblige, your brother in gospel bonds,

JOHN R. MARTIN.

ROMANS 6.22 (BEEBE)

Dear Brother Beebe: I believe all God’s people are humble and forgiving - I speak from my knowledge of them. We are strangers in the flesh, but I hope not in Spirit. I believe that christians all see eye to eye, in matters of experience; and all speak the same things. I feel a desire to say something about the goodness and mercy of God to poor, perishing sinners. It seems that the Lord is in this place, and we knew it not. I often think of the precious words of the apostle, when he said, “For I reckon that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us.” I desire that you would remember me in your prayers to God, for I feel that I am the most unworthy of all. Will it be asking too much if I request your views on Romans 6.22? “But now being made free from sin and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end, everlasting life.” This text has a great bearing on my mind. I heard an able minister preach from it, and he said that christians would bring forth good fruit. This set me to examine myself, and I could see no good in me; for in me dwells no good thing. I asked a brother his views on it, and he said he thought it applied to the preachers. But I must close. I remain your friend. May we meet in heaven.
