Romans 5.14 (BEEBE)

We have no indication that they looked European, but this is best we could find.

Brother Beebe: Will you please give your views on Romans v. 14? Who were those who had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression? May the Lord abundantly bless you, and enable you to conduct the press to the honor and glory of his great name, and to contend earnestly for the faith which was once delivered to the saints.

Yours, as I hope, in tribulation, and in hope of immortality, JOHN S. BRINSON.

ROMANS 3.3-5 (BEEBE)

Agreeable to a desire of sister Peck, we offer a few remarks in regard to the working of tribulation, &c., in harmony with all other things, for the special good of God’s people, and the glory's own great name.

GOD IN THE CONSTITUTION (ELDER FA CHICK)

It is fascinating how little things changed from 1896 America.  Some are still trying to make America into a "Christian Nation" - ed.

RESPONSE TO ELDER STOKE'S ARTICLE ON PREDESTINATION (WALDENSIS)

The following piece was written several years ago. As a response to an article appearing in an old school paper. The article was the product of one of their editors, so they declined to publish this piece. Since that time, the editor left him and took up company with the conditionalists, along with several of his fellow travelers. As an old proverb goes, water seeks its own level.

PREDESTINATION (DB STOKES)

We wish to make it known that we have problems with this article.  These issues will be discussed by Elder Robert Lackey in a response article he published in 1983 in The Remnant - ed.

ROMANS 3.7 (BEEBE)

Dear Brother Beebe: Some three weeks ago my attention was called, by Brother Symmond’s, to the seventh verse of the third chapter of Romans, which reads: “For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory, why am I also judged as a sinner.” And at the time, nor yet, is my mind so clear on the intention of the Holy Spirit by the apostle as I desire, and although asking much of you, I would be glad to have you, through the “Signs” give your views, especially on the first clause. Likely it may meet Brother Symmond’s eye, although I cannot say he takes the “Signs.” From your brother in a desire to know the truth.

ROMANS 2.1 (BEEBE)

Elder Beebe: - Dear sir, as I have received much consolation in times past in reading the Signs and especially your expositions of portions of scripture, I would humbly request, although personally not acquainted with you, that you give your views through the Signs upon a portion of Scripture found in Romans 2 chapter, 1st verse, particularly what it is to judge another.

Yours, G.W.H.

ROMANS 1.18 (BEEBE)

Brother J. A. Davis, of Olney, Mo., asks for our views on Romans i. 18: “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.”

THE DIVINE SOVERIGNTY

Sometimes it has seemed to us difficult to write or speak concerning A scriptural subject, from the very fact that it seems so plain, and so much is said about it in the word of God, that we are at a loss where to begin, or where to close, or what Scripture shall be quoted.

2 TIMOTHY 4.3-4

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

CALLING UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD (ELDER FA CHICK)

Brother, I M Gentry of Tennessee has requested some remarks from us upon Acts 2.21. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

THE PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL (ELDER FA CHICK)

Dear Brethren, editors of the Signs of the Times.

I have been reading your paper for some time and have enjoyed it much. I would be glad for you to give me your views on the following scripture. Go you into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved, but heat up believes not, shall be damned. Mark 16.15. Did not just make the plan of salvation playing for all who desired to be saved. Will we be held accountable for not sending the gospel to the heathen? Will they be saved without the gospel? If it were four, damn for some to be saved, then a certain portion to be lost. Why was it necessary for Christ to die for the world that whosoever believes in him shall have everlasting life? If a man were foreordained to be lost under the free gift of salvation, can he be saved if he so desires? If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I do not ask this in any spirit of argument, but desire and explanation of it. Yours truly.

William A Murrow.

2 TIMOTHY 1.9, 10 (Gilbert Beebe)

“Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began; but is now made manifest by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”

A DISCOURSE BETWEEN CAPTAIN KIFFIN AND DR. CHAMBERLAIN ABOUT IMPOSITION OF HANDS

A DISCOURSE Between Capt. Kiffin, and Dr. Chamberlain, ABOUT Imposition of Hands.

Acts 19.9, 10.

But when divers were hardened and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the Disciples, disputing daily in the School of one Tyrannus.

And this continued by the space of two years, so that all they who dwelt in Asia, heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

1 Tim. 4.14.

I TIMOTHY 6:1-5 (Gilbert Beebe)

“Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of our God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are faithful and beloved partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. If any man teaches otherwise and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.”

I TIMOTHY 5:24,25 (Gilbert Beebe)

Friend Beebe
: Please give your views on I Timothy 5:24,25, “Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going to judgment; and some men they follow after. Likewise, also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hidden.” By so doing you will oblige a sincere inquirer after the truth.

Your friend in tribulation, J. Childers,
Drake Co., Ohio,
Sept. 21, 1861.

I TIMOTHY 4.10 (Gilbert Beebe)

A correspondent in Westchester Co., N.Y., has desired our views on the latter part of this text, namely: “For, therefore, we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those that believe.”

I TIMOTHY 2.3-4 (Gilbert Beebe)

FLESH AND SPIRIT (GILBERT BEEBE)

https://www.oldlazydog.com/blog/2019/3/19/flesh-vs-spirit

If it were as easy to give correct and satisfactory answers in all cases as to ask naughty and perplexing questions we could better afford to devote our time and paper to the elucidation of every query that our readers were pleased to propound but as it is not our numerous queries have the advantage ground children may ask questions which men may find it difficult to answer.

THE FAILURE OF MISSIONISM ACKNOWLDGED (William L. Beebe)

We often hear of the success of the Burma Mission by Adoniram Judson among Baptist Circles.  But apparently by their own account, success was not achieved. We refer our readers to a contemporary account already posted on this website. - ed.

THE BEIEVER'S RULE OF LIFE

WILLIAM HUNTINGTON was born on February 2,1745, near Cranbrook, Kent, England. He died on July 1, 1813, in his sixty-ninth year. Of Huntington's description of his sweet blessed deliverance into gospel liberty, J. C. Philpot says: "We have read some of the finest productions of human eloquence, in both ancient and modern languages, and therefore we know what we assert when we declare that, in our judgment, the decryption . . .; apart from the experience there described, as a mere piece of eloquence, is one of the grandest and most beautiful pieces of writing that has ever come under our eye." Well, might our author say: "Oh happy year! happy day! blessed minute! Sacred spot! Yea, rather blessed be my Redeemer, who 'delivered my soul from death, and mine eyes from bears, and my feet from falling.' " "God raises up such men as John Bunyan and William Huntington but once in a century." -William Romaine. Dr. Henry Cole, translator of the Works of Luther and Calvin, after referring to Huntington as "that great and blessed servant of the Highest," says, "I believe he bore and left in Britain the greatest and most glorious testimony to the power of God's salvation that ever was borne or left therein." A. J. Baxter, the editor of the Gospel Advocate, wrote: "There are hundreds who will both speak and write with respect of such men of God as Owen, Bunyan, Romaine, Barridge, and Newton, who would recoil at the mention of the name of Huntington. And why? Because his conduct was less consistent than theirs? No, but because, in-depth, closeness, and discrimination of vital realities he excelled them all; and was, therefore, the least comprehended, 1 Cor. 2:15. (Thomas Wright in Life of Huntington.) (T. Rutt in Foreword to the Kingdom of Heaven Taken by Prayer, by William Huntington).
