G. BEEBE’S SONS - DEAR BRETHREN IN CHRIST:
By request of our deeply afflicted sister Johnson, I write, briefly, to inform the brethren and readers of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES, of the death of Elder John F. Johnson M.D. He passed one week ago today, Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1881, in his 81st year. Though conscious of the near approach of the time of his departure, he had but little to say, seemingly wrapped in his own silent meditations. His history as an able minister and writer is too well and widely known for me to even attempt to say anything to his memory in this brief notice. He ever had a word of cheer and comfort to Zion’s afflicted, and like your dear father, never turned his back to the enemies of truth. But he is gone, gone to his eternal rest, no more to mix and mingle in the conflict of life. We miss him, and we mourn his departure. Still, we should remember that it is the Captain of Israel’s hosts who has called him from the field of carnage and strife. Now with a crown of glory on his head, the folds of his banner sweep open to the gentle breeze of heaven, and on it written in letters of living light is VICTORY over the last enemy.
May God in his mercy comfort his dear wife and children, together with the churches he has served so long and faithfully, and may he give the spirit of reconciliation to his will, and desire;
“For faith that will not shrink,
Though pressed by every foe,
That will not tremble on the brink,
Of any earthly foe.
That will not murmur or complain,
Beneath the chastening rod;
But in the hour of grief and pain,
Will lean upon its God.
A faith that shines more bright and clear,
When tempests rage about,
That, when in danger, knows no fear,
In darkness feels no doubt.
Lord, give us such a faith as this,
And then whatever may come,
We’ll taste e’en here the hallowed bliss,
Of an eternal home.”

I see in the SIGNS OF THE TIMES of April 15th, that you think the deacons may be ordained by the action of the church, or by the vote of the church. We want a deacon, and one proper instruction, as we are young and ignorant, and make this appeal to your more mature judgment on the subject. Allow me to trouble you further, as it may be the last time. If the person we desire should serve us as a deacon has a wife who is not a member of the church, does this disqualify him from being a deacon? We wish to know whether their role given in 1 Timothy III. 11 requires of the deacon's wife that she shall be a professor or not, and do the requisitions supply to her if she is not a professor of religion? Brethren Beebe, if not too much trouble, please let us know your mind on the subject through our family paper, the SIGNS OF THE TIMES, and you will greatly oblige one and feel truly as the least sheep in all the flock. If I could only know that I am a sheep, even an astray one, I would be better satisfied.

Although the text may seem clear in the Signs and is suitable for reading, it is not ideal for copying and pasting.
