[We investigate what Beebe thought on the subject of regeneration. These results plus others, will be included in an upcoming eBook titled, Regeneration and the New Birth. This discussion occurred between Elder Lackey and me when he questioned whether both terms were the same - ed]
Now, whether the word
regeneration, which occurs but barely twice in the Bible, refers to the
begetting of the Son of God from the dead, and his being the firstborn from the
dead, and the resurrection life of Christ secured to all his seed, constituting
them the children of the resurrection, or not, is not so important for us to
know and comprehend as it is that we should know and gratefully acknowledge
that when Jesus arose from the dead, in his resurrection the portals of
immortal glory were opened to all who are accounted worthy of that world, and
are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

No idea seems to be entertained
by Webster, nor by the learned theologians, from whom he borrows his theory,
that the mind of man is a carnal or fleshly mind, that it is at enmity against
God, not subject to the law of God, neither indeed, can be. Indeed, the
prevailing doctrine of all will-worshipers, and carnal religionists, is that
regeneration, the new birth, and all that is involved in the Christian
experience, is only to give some new impulse to our old carnal faculties, a new
direction to the old carnal mind, and a new inclination and direction to the
affections and lusts of the flesh.

Neither faith nor baptism is
regeneration, but both are evidences of a regenerated state.

The regenerating power of the
Holy Ghost is by none of them considered an indispensable prerequisite to their
religion. Jews, Pagans, and Mohammedans pretend to have no such qualification;
Catholics and Protestants profess to believe regeneration to be necessary, but
hold it to be a work that can be performed through the instrumentality of men
and means.

…the struggle the labor, the
travail of regeneration gives place to deliverance of the new man, which, not
after Adam is created a natural, carnal or corruptible man, of the earth
earthy; but is created after God (Christ) in righteousness (Christ) and true
holiness (Christ.) By this renewing of the Holy Ghost a spiritual life is
communicated to the child of God, which is the spirit of promise (in
distinction from law) and whereby are given unto us exceeding great and
precious promises, that by these we might be made partakers of the divine
nature.

Therefore that life which is born
of the flesh is born of corruptible seed and is mortal. But they who are the
subjects of regeneration and the new birth, are born of God, of an
incorruptible seed, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever; and
they are a “chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar
people.”

The washing of regeneration must
mean the putting away our sins by the sacrifice of himself, for he gave himself
for us for that very purpose, that he might cleanse us from all iniquity, and
purify unto himself a peculiar people, and present them without spot or wrinkle
before God.

by this quickening spirit, and by
this quickening spirit, in regeneration, all the saints are born of
incorruptible seed by the Word of God, and by this self-same spirit the mortal
bodies shall finally be clothed in immortality

...we pass to notice how this salvation is brought home experimentally to the heirs of promise. “By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost; and according to his mercy.” By the washing of regeneration, we understand the cleansing operation of the Holy Spirit in the work of regeneration. We have attempted to show, when dwelling on the subject of regeneration, that as the effect of being quickened into life, we are brought to realize ourselves vile and polluted, and, as no unclean thing can enter the kingdom of God,
