Isaiah 50:5-7
The Lord God hath opened my ear,
and I was not rebellious,
neither turned away back.
I gave my back to the smiters,
and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded:
therefore have I set my face like a flint,
and I know that I SHALL NOT BE ASHAMED.
We see in this passage the great faith and faithfulness of our savior. Our great substitute whose face was “set like a flint.” The one who “for the joy set before him, endured the cross” and was not “rebellious.” What great love for his sheep, what great faithfulness as a Son, but even more as our substitute. He was a faithful servant and substitute unto death, despite all He went through to get there.
So what is the Lord talking about, when he said he would NOT be ashamed?
We know he surely was treated shamefully. Despised, rejected, blasphemed, falsely accused, abandoned by friends, beaten, mocked, and tortured, but also made to stand as a sinner(but never have sinned, or become a sinner). While the Lord endured the cross, He surely despised this shame he experienced.
But this could not be the shame Jesus spoke of, as he said he would NOT be ashamed.
What possibly could this shame be?
In the everlasting covenant, as Christ was brought forth as our surety, substitute, advocate, and intercessor, he was given a people by the Father to represent. And with great and precious promises, he was given to be a savior for these people, so that those people would receive the benefit, and the promises made to him, no exceptions.
And, as that surety, Christ promised:
Genesis 43:9
“I will be surety for him[them]; of my hand shalt thou require him[them]: if I bring him[them] not unto thee, and set him[them] before thee, THEN LET ME BEAR THE BLAME FOREVER
So HOW will he NOT be ashamed??
Isaiah 53:11
He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be SATISFIED: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
John 6:37-39
ALL that the Father giveth me SHALL come to me, and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And THIS is the Father's WILL which hath sent me, that of ALL which he hath GIVEN me I should lose NOTHING, but should raise it up again at the last day.
The shame that Christ is speaking of is the shame of enduring the cross as the sinners substitute and one for whom he stood being lost, and not receiving all the promises in the salvation of Jehovah from everlasting!
The shame of taking their sin and paying the full price for it, and then for one of those precious children to suffer the penalty also. To have one of those, given by the Father, to perish and not be saved.
May we strike from our mind and our vocabulary that there is even a remote possibility that there will ever be found in Hell, one for whom Christ died.
His name is Jesus, savior, redeemer! He was called this, “FOR he SHALL save his people from their sins” and that he did. Every last one, none to be left out, all to be returned to the Father. Not by what man chooses of their own volition, but because our savior
SHALL NOT BE ASHAMED!
May God bless and encourage
