Their love of money has betrayed them, as it did Simon Magus. Sent out by missionary boards, and not by Jesus Christ, they look for profit by fleecing the people; lugging the cause of God, and the care of the heathen in, to aid them in getting money.

Few have paused to inquire at the sacred oracle, whether there be invitations of any kind in the gospel or not. If there are invitations in the gospel, where are they? What are they? And unto whom are they addressed?

DISCUSSION OF "W." AND "IOTA" (BEEBE) 1843

We have copied from the “Jerseyman” a discussion on the subject of Total Abstinence societies, between our old correspondent “W.” and some anonymous writer, whose articles are signed “Iota.” In addition to the well-applied arguments of our friend “W,” we will offer a few remarks on the extravagant assumption of “Iota,” that the modern Total Abstinence society has not only been auxiliary to the church but also instrumental in making a very important improvement in the regions of glory. This assumption will be found in the closing sentence of his second paragraph, on the middle column of page 108, viz: “Thus the Temperance cause has been auxiliary to the church, and has been blessed as the instrument of diffusing not only happiness and comfort amongst thousands of wretched families BUT JOY IN HEAVEN OVER SINNERS CONVERTED TO GOD!!!”

A correspondent in Ohio desires our views on John 18:37. “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice.” 

And sister F.L. Bagg, of Illinois, has requested our views on John 1:9. “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

2 Peter 2.1. OUR views on this scripture are called for by sister “E. B.” as will be seen in the postscript of her letter on page 21. of this number. The principle difficulty complained of in understanding the subject, is involved in the words, The Lord that bought them, applied to those who in verse 3, are subjects of judgment and damnation.

Brother Beebe: Will you please give your views, through the “Signs” as to whether it is indispensable that a Deacon’s wife should be a member of the church with her husband, and oblige some Enquiring Brethren,

DEACONS (BEEBE) 1880

Elder G. Beebe & Son: We do not wish to burden you with these questions, but we really need instruction. We are a little church, of which I am a member; we were formed about one year ago. We have no preacher or deacons; regarding deacons, we wish for instruction. We have been trying to get a presbytery to come and ordain deacons for us. I think it is the practice here among our churches to ordain deacons by a presbytery. 

I see in the SIGNS OF THE TIMES of April 15th, that you think the deacons may be ordained by the action of the church, or by the vote of the church. We want a deacon, and one proper instruction, as we are young and ignorant, and make this appeal to your more mature judgment on the subject. Allow me to trouble you further, as it may be the last time. If the person we desire should serve us as a deacon has a wife who is not a member of the church, does this disqualify him from being a deacon? We wish to know whether their role given in 1 Timothy III. 11 requires of the deacon's wife that she shall be a professor or not, and do the requisitions supply to her if she is not a professor of religion? Brethren Beebe, if not too much trouble, please let us know your mind on the subject through our family paper, the SIGNS OF THE TIMES, and you will greatly oblige one and feel truly as the least sheep in all the flock. If I could only know that I am a sheep, even an astray one, I would be better satisfied.

THE DEAD (BEEBE) 1861

Mr. Editor: A disease known as putrid sore throat, or Diptheria, has visited our section during the past winter, and, like a destroying angel, hovered over our habitation. My youngest three children - one a boy of ten years, the others, girls, aged 12 and 8 years respectively - were, within the space of one month, taken away from this, as we trust, to the upper and better world.

[The Delaware Baptist Association writes a letter of congratulations to President elect-Thomas Jefferson. Mr. Jefferson answers the letter with one of his own written from the White House in July of 1801. The letter was found residing on the third floor of the Hollingsworth House and sold at auction for $200,000 in the early 21st century. - ed.]
