A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CONSTITUTION OF FREE GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH, LILONGWE, MALAWI

LINK I (1). From the Council of Peace (Psa. 89th) to John the Baptist;

LINK II (2). From John the Baptist to Jesus Christ;

LINK III (3). From Jesus Christ to the First Baptist Church at Jerusalem;

LINK IV (4). From the First Baptist Church at Jerusalem to the First Baptist Church at Antioch;

LINK V (5). From the First Baptist Church at Antioch, by Paul’s missionary journey to the First Baptist Church at Rome;

LINK VI (6)
. From the First Baptist Church at Rome, during Nero’s persecutions to the Valleys of the Piedmont. This is where the saints became known as Waldensians.

LINK VII (7). From the Waldensians of the Valleys of the Piedmont, into other parts of Europe;

LINK VIII (8). From the old Waldensians to John Spillsbury and John Norcott in the early 1600s;

LINK IX (9)
. From John Spillsbury and John Norcott to the First lasting Particular Baptist Church at Wapping;

LINK X (10). From the old Wapping Church, gathered in 1633, by Spillsbury and Norcott, came other Particular Baptist Churches.

LINK XI (11)
. In 1640, Richard Blount was sent by a congregation of unbaptized saints in the London area to Holland to seek Gospel Baptism from Waldensians thriving there at the time. These believers had fled persecution from the Prelates in the counties round about London, were seeking to hide in the masses, and wanted to be in Gospel Order. Blount received Baptism and membership and was commissioned to return to London to preach the Gospel and Administer Ordinances to constitute Churches in Gospel Order.

LINK XII (12). The London Association of Particular Baptists was formed with the Seven (7) original Churches; three from the Spillsbury\Norcott line, and four from the Blount efforts.

LINK XIII (13)
. One of the Seven original Churches identified as the Old Glasshouse Church, sent John Myles and Thomas Proud back into Wales. There they contacted the old historic church at Olchon. This Church dates to the 12th century at least. It appears that this was an effort to anchor more perfectly the Order of some existing congregations or to establish new congregations with a more direct line to the old Welsh Churches.

LINK XIV (14)
. More new congregations were constituted, and it appears some in question were reconstituted as well. The new congregations spread rapidly in the mid and late 1600s.

LINK XV (15). The Old Olchon Church in Wales gave being to several daughter Churches, two of these Churches, one at Pembrokeshire and one at Rhydwilim gave constitutional being to another Church (organized in old Wales) that moved its membership in total to America in 1701. This is still identified as the WELSH TRACT OLD SCHOOL BAPTIST CHURCH. Thomas Griffin was their pastor at the time. His grave is outside the front door of the meeting house. The congregation is still extant today with regular Gospel meetings, most recently served by Elder Robert Lackey before his passing on Dec. 26, 2023.

LINK XVI (16). From Welsh Tract Old School Baptist Church, Newark, Delaware to the Old Faith Baptist Church, Paris, AR., being duly constituted out of several members of Welsh Tract Church and other newly baptized believers, under the able ministry of Elder James Poole ofSnow Hill Church, Elder Robert Lackey of Welsh Tract Church, and Elder Herb Hatfield of Mayhew Primitive Baptist Church in Columbus, MS. This was in Dec. 1992. Mr. R. E. Pound, Mr. John K. O’Brian, and Mr. Dan O’Dell were each ordained to Eldership soon thereafter. This was in the late spring of 1993.

LINK XVII (17). From the Old Faith Baptist Church, by way of Elder Dan O’Dell, to the Lilongwe FREE GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH, Malawi, Central Africa, duly set into Gospel Order by its free and voluntary consent, June 15, 2019. Brother Lackson Banda was ordained Elder on that same day and commissioned by the new Body of Christ to administer Ordinances, Pastor, Oversee and teach those entrusted to him in the old faith and order of Christ and the Apostles.

By Dan O’Dell, July 28, 2024.
