Many to whom I write will quickly recognize the importance of the year 1701. They will know it has to do with the arrival of a duly constituted Church of Jesus Christ upon American soil which had immigrated on shipboard from Wales to settle in the new world. As a Gospel Church of Jesus Christ, they had come seeking religious liberty to worship without fear in a free land as had many of their brethren of like kind some fourteen years earlier. This is not altogether about them. It is about the kind Providence of God respecting those Baptists that preceded them from different countries and assembled themselves together as Gospel Churches in and around Pennepek, Pennsylvania near Philadelphia.

THE text for this occasion, though not in the bible, may be found in the American Baptist Home Mission Society Record of Proceedings, at their fourth anniversary, held in Philadelphia. In the thirty-seventh item of their minutes, we have the following remarkable passage: “Resolved, That the Home Mission enterprise is one of the highest importance to the prosperity and perpetuity of our republican institutions, and should therefore receive the most cordial approbation and efficient support of every Christian and patriot in all parts of our country.”

Brother Beebe: - Our brother Raymond was not mistaken in supposing that his ideas would not all be received, by the readers of the Signs. I think he labors under a mistake relative to that union that constitutes the oneness of Christ and His people, and probably relative to the idea intended to be conveyed when we speak of the substitution of Christ. I will propose for his consideration what appears to me to be the Scriptural doctrine of the union of Christ and His church.

THE VALUE OF KOINE GREEK IN THE STUDY OF THE BIBLE (SANTAMARIA)

Brethren:  
We are not in the habit of quoting Presbyterians much.   But, this essay, which was written at the height of the Modernist-Fundemantilist Controversy of the early 29th century is worth reading.  We do NOT think that a knowledge of Greek is essential to understanding the Bible.  But neither do we think that it is detrimental.  I put it to you this way, if one received a letter from a loved one in another language, would rather read it and understand it in its original language, or would you settle for some approximate translation of it?  All translations are a compromise in that they try to express something in a target language that does not have the same nuances as the source language.  Does this principle not apply more in reading God's dear scriptures?   We are not saying that the English translation of the Bible does not accurately reflect God's meaning - it does!  We are simply saying that Greek is beneficial.  Let it be made clear right now, however, that without the Holy Spirit opening our eyes as we read, all including Greek lost!  After all, look at the Pharisees, who were proficient in both Greek & Hebrew, yet they rejected Christ!  But, there were Old School Baptist preachers who were learned men in both Hebrew and Greek.  Look at Paul!
