THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRST LONDON CONFESSION...

The Origin of the First London Confession and its Importance for Baptists Today

In looking over the history of the early Particular Baptists, it seems there are many Primitive Baptists who do not know about their early confessions. Many today who claim to venerate the Second London Confession of 1677 / 1689 (and its American cousin the Philadelphia Confession) have but little knowledge of the earlier 1st London Confession. This is one of the most important documents of our forefathers in the Faith we could examine today, because it gives in a very brief form a summary of their belief and practice. From it we can see how these older Baptists were not tainted with Protestant or Puritan notions regarding many doctrines about which there is now question among Baptists. In fact, what is left out of this confession is as important as what is there.

CHILDREN OF GOD OR CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL?

“Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world (Galatians 4:3).”

RR: A BRIEF EXPOSITION OF REVELATION 20:1-3

The book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ is regarded by many as a mysterious book which is hard to understand. They see its unfamiliar language of beasts, locusts, dragons, etc. and think they cannot make “heads or tails” out of it.

ORIGIN OF THE PARTICULAR BAPTISTS IN ENGLAND...

On several occasions we have been asked to set forth the historical evidence of the origin of the English Particular Baptists for the knowledge of our brethren. We have been saddened by the lack of historical knowledge among those who wear the name Primitive or Old School Baptists. Misconceptions, distortions and even outright lies are what are passed on as the true history of our people. While it is true much of our history is buried in the obscurity of the centuries, there is also much we can know.

SERMON BY ELDER DIRKES ON HEBREWS 6:9; Isaiah 9:18; Psalm 76:10; Hebrews 6:17...

”But Beloved, we are persuaded better things of you and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak; for God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which you have showed toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints and do minister” (Hebrews 6:9)

POLEMIC SERIES: WHAT IS A "LOCAL" CHURCH?....

What is a local church?  When does an assembly of believers stop being a local assembly?

WELSH SUCCESSION OF BAPTIST FAITH AND PRACTICE BY MICHAEL N. IVEY

This book purports to be a work of Baptist history and Primitive Baptist, in particular. It is important to know how a history book fits into the general run of Baptist histories. There are three main types of Baptist histories one can find today.

BANNER OF HOPE: QUERY ON REGENERATION...

BRETHREN

May this poor backwoods hardshell request your thoughts on one word. I hope it will not prove to be embarrassing to acknowledge I cannot fully comprehend the fullness of the word “brethren” use by our Lord (I hope) in John 20:17.

Might this be the REGENERATION-manifestation of vital union or how sublime is this in your sights. I tremor at the magnitude of this declaration, the absence of Judas, an then to the benefactors of His will. I pray you may be blessed to share your thoughts should God will on this request.

BANNER OF HOPE: QUESTION ON BORN ANEW...

Question on “Born Anew”
Dear Elder Chet,

I read Elder Smoot’s article several times, and got more out of it each time. Excellent!
Just two questions if I may ask.

On page 9, top paragraph, he mentions the “sinner born again theory.” By this does he mean the belief by Arminians and psuedo-calvinists that the sinner must choose to be born again, rather than a work of the Holy Spirit alone? If so then I understand. If not, I am at a loss here.

On same page he says “that such a commandment, in the peculiar sense in which they were given, were addressed to all men.” I don’t understand what he means at all.

I would appreciate (again) your help.
In Hope,

RR: OF THE SAME LUMP...

Sixteen years ago we wrote the following article.  We stand by it today as a clear expression of our views on this verse.  We would only add: Can this potter's power be thwarted?  Can this potter's will be subverted? Will he not do with his own as he desires? Consider.

ELDER DIRKES ON MATTHEW 9:9....

“And as Jesus passed forth from thence, He saw a man named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom, and He said unto him, Follow Me; and he arose and followed Him” (Matt. 9: 9)

SUNDAY SCHOOL, VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL & CHILDREN'S CHURCH PART 1...

Mom, apple-pie, all-American practices like Sunday Schools and Children's Church although common now, were not always practiced in America.  As amazing as it may sound to some, they were unheard of in the New Testament church.

A BRIEF COMMENT ON THE KING JAMES VERSION

In the 2nd Article of the Statement of Principles we find the following: “The King James Version is the preferred English Translation.” Just because it is the “preferred” translation doesn't mean it is the only translation. We are not of those who loudly proclaim themselves to be “King James Only,” We certainly are not of those who claim that any English translation of the Bible is inspired.

ADAM AND MEANS...

A few questions came to my mind this morning regarding "means" in salvation, particularly in relation to Adam.  I know there are some who believe Adam was the first reprobate and others who believe he was the first of the election of grace.  For argument's sake we shall take the latter position.

JAMES 2:18 SERMON BY ELDER DIRKES...

“But a man may say, You have faith and I have works: shew me your faith without your works and I will shew you my faith by my works” (James 2:18)

POLEMICAL SERIES: THE TITLE REVEREND....

The title reverend is found nowhere in the Bible.  It is foreign to the New Testament church in vocabulary and in meaning.

ELDER DIRKES ON I CHRONICLES 26:13...

“And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate” (I Chr. 26:13)

A NEW BEGINNING

Many of you may recognize the name from the books we have published.  We published 7 volumes of Gilbert Beebe's Editorials from the Signs of the Times; Select Works of Elder Samuel Trott; A Feast of Fat Things, and others. Maybe you remember when The Remnant was published by us as well.  We now enter the digital age of internet publishing.  It is our plan to bring forth from the treasury things both old and new, all of which will uphold our original Statement of Principles.
