The following letter is being printed in the interest of historical accuracy. We believe there is far too much bad information being circulated regarding our doctrine, practice, and heritage. Where possible, we aim to set the record straight.

Back in the early days of our poor efforts to preach the gospel, we were asked to speak at an association of Primitive Baptists where the doctrines of grace were generally held in low esteem. Knowing we were being observed with squinty-eyed cynicism, we nevertheless spoke as we had been taught of the Lord; on the Grace of God. As best as can be recalled, the Lord gave a portion of light and liberty for about three quarters of an hour, and we then took our seat, expecting the worst; and we got it.

BLESSED (POOLE) 1988

AFFILIATION (POOLE) 1992

We knew a deacon brother some years ago that was a ring-leader for the majority side in a sad dispute among the members of a Primitive Baptist church. He led the forces to exclude about a dozen members for "affiliating" with those the majority deemed to be in disorder. After a hurtful and acrimonious session the "disorderly members" were put out of the church, and they went off, to be later received by those of another church of their sentiment. Well, it was not long after that, until the first church had another contention arise, and the aforementioned deacon found himself the one under accusation, in similar manner to the ones he had engineered out the door months before. With merciless dispatch, the church excluded the poor deacon, and so he too was out in the world, just like those were he railroaded out earlier.

I now propose with your permission to offer some additional thoughts on that important subject. As important as I consider it to be in the Christian system, I have never seen it incorporated with any formula of faith, either printed or written.

MY DEAR BROTHER BEEBE: – Although a controversy has been going on between the Old and New School Baptists in the West, for some years, in relation to what Adam was antecedently to his transgressing the divine command, yet I was not aware of a discrepancy in the views of “Old School” Baptists, on that point, until I read your editorial remarks in number 20, vol. viii., of the “Signs,” in which your readers were informed that “A part of the Redstone Baptist Association, Pennsylvania,” take exception to the views contained in the circular of the Licking Association to be “built upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being Chief Corner Stone,” and consequently that she recognized the Bible as the only infallible standard of faith and practice.

My Dear Sister: – Your very kind and appreciated letter of the 4th instant was duly received, and but for engagements rather pressing upon me should have met an earlier response. So far from upbraiding you for the liberty taken in asking my views of the text quoted, I am exceedingly gratified when I find the children of God inquiring for the truth, as designed by the inspired writers of the holy Scriptures. It is to me evidence of a healthy state of mind in matters of the last moment to us, while in this wilderness of sin and sorrow. How much more rational for Christians to be employed in searching the mind of the dear Redeemer, as declared in the record God has given of his Son, than in descanting on the faults of their brethren or upbraiding the unregenerate for their unbelief.
