BEEBE ON MATTHEW 26.40 1858

We have and do understand this passage to mean that the disciples - Peter, James, and John - were literally asleep. Such was the weakness of their flesh, that, although they loved the Savior with the most sincere and abiding love, and were at that time willing in spirit to go with him to the prison or to death, they could not watch with him in that one hour of his dreadful agony and suffering.

BEEBE ON MATTHEW 25.25-36 1857

“And I was afraid, and went, and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed.”

BEEBE ON MATTHEW 25.14-30, 1861

We have often been requested to give our views on this parable, and we have sometimes ventured to give such views as we have had on the subject; but we have never pretended to have any special light upon this subject, nor do we now feel competent to the undertaking. We have always found it difficult to explain satisfactorily to our own mind any of the parables contained in the sacred volume, excepting so far as their obvious intention may be inferred from the subjects and circumstances on which they were spoken.

BEEBE ON MATTHEW 24.42 1869

Brother Beebe: – I was very interested in your editorial on the “Portentous Signs,” and would like to have your views more extensively on that subject. The minds of the Lord’s people in this section of the country are exercised on the subject. Will you please give us your views on Matthew 24:42, through the “Signs of the Times.”

Yours in hope of eternal life,

George W. Gersham.

BEEBE ON MATTHEW 24.21-39 1856

It would afford us much pleasure to give a satisfactory explanation of every passage of Scripture on which we are so frequently called to express our views, by our numerous correspondents, if we had the ability, and could command the necessary time and space which would be required; but in all these respects we are deficient.

BEEBE ON MATTHEW 24.34 1860

MATTHEW XXIV. My Brother: – Will you please give me your views on Matthew xxiv? I am at loss to know how to present the subject in the form of a text; but I will try to let you know what I want. In the third verse it is said, As he (Jesus) sat upon the Mount of Olives, his disciples asked him privately, What shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? It appears to me that from that verse to the thirty- fourth, Jesus describes and tells them what shall take place before his coming and of the end of the world. And then he tells them, "Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." The words, This generation shall not pass, is what is a mystery to me. The general acceptation of the word, generation, means all that were living at that time, and so I understand it.

Now the query with me is, what does it mean as used in this place? This is what I want you to explain. Believe me to be your devoted friend, and, as I hope, your humble brother in the Lord. May God bless us, and give us light and understanding in his word. Farewell. -

MATTHEW 18 (BEEBE) 1862

Brother Beebe: Will you please give your views on the eighteenth chapter of Matthew, particularly on the subject of church discipline? Can a member of the church be lawfully excluded, except it is done according to the rule laid down in that chapter? Some think it unnecessary to take labor in all cases, especially cases where the offense is committed in the presence of the church. Your views on the subject will be kindly received. Yours, with esteem,

C. B. Fuller.

MATTHEW XIII. 24-30, & JOHN XVII. 6 (BEEBE) 1880

ELDER G. BEEBE & SON: – As I do not remember ever having asked you a question, if it will not trouble you too much I will now ask two. In Matthew xiii we find the field is the world. Does man represent the field where the good and bad seeds were sown? In John xvii. 6: “I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me.” Were these men (or church) given to Christ, or was Christ given to the men (or church), to be crucified for their offenses, and raised again for their justification? I understand that Christ was given to the church as the violated law demanded blood, which man could not pay and live again.

Your brother in hope of life everlasting,

J. D. PARKER.

MANUFACTURED SERMONS (BEEBE) 1866

“Rev. Dr. Demarest, one of the leading clergymen of the Dutch Church, left a very eligible charge in Newark, N.J., to settle in Chicago. One of the main reasons for leaving Newark was that he had ten years’ labor, in the form of sermons, of which he was desirous of availing himself. But alas! Literary wealth will take to its wings. The car of the American Express Company, in which were his clothes and sermons, took fire, and all were consumed.”
