BIBLE STUDIES AND RELATED SUBJECTS (ELDER JOHN G. CROWLEY)

A sister church has adopted formal Bible studies, giving rise to wounded feelings among our fellowship. 

We wish to record our reasons for opposing these new things. We wish to be distinctly understood that we recommend the reading of the Holy Scriptures to all and sundry without reserve. We believe that the reading of the Scriptures has been used by God to awaken and feed His elect and that He imparts to them a hunger and thirst for His Word. 

We further believe that the people of God delight speak to one another about the spiritual treasures they find in the Word of God. 

We feel, however, that formal Bible Studies (so-called), after the manner of the Arminians, held week after week at a stated time, where the Bible is discussed and dissected with the tools of carnal reason as if it were the mere textbook of a human science, are a grave departure from the spiritual manner in which Old Baptists desire to worship. 

We feel such practices smack of burdensome duty and legal bondage, and give the appearance of going “after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them” (II Kings 17:15). 

Some think formal Bible studies beneficial to the young, but often such tiresome regimentation sours children on worship and the Scriptures. A child growing up in a home where the Scriptures are truly loved and revered will not have to attend a special meeting to hear the Word quoted and expounded. Nor do we expect that the truth as it is in Jesus will long abide in such institutions founded on worldly wisdom.

The following discourse was delivered by Elder Wilson Thompson, on the occasion of the death of Jediah Hill, an old and much-esteemed
brother with whom he had for many years been intimately acquainted, and for whom he entertained the strongest Christian regard and brotherly attachment. It was delivered at the residence of Mr. Henry Rogers, an estimable citizen, near Mount Healthy, Hamilton County, Ohio, on the 31st of July, 1859, to a large and attentive concourse of people:

A NEW TRANSLATION (BEEBE) 1833

Forasmuch, as the world is making rapid progress in arts and sciences, and the old-fashioned doctrine of the cross, is left so far in the background, and as the style, and more particularly the principles, of the Old and New Testaments are so poor and vague, and so illy suited to the refined taste and feelings of this enlightened generation, and as there is noticing recorded in that book in support of the doctrine and practice peculiar to the present day, and as the ambitious and learned of our age are put to great inconvenience from time to time to prove that they are of God, or employed in His service, and as we cannot reasonably expect that the learned, wealthy and great men of this world will be willing to embrace the religion of Him who was meek and lowly in its present form. Therefore we have been led to suggest a few alterations and perversion of that holy book; which would, in our opinion, greatly subserve the cause of those who lie in wait to deceive.

ASHDOD LANGUAGE (BEEBE) 1838

IN a late number of what is called the Christian Index, (a significant name, inasmuch as that paper often points at christians, as Ishmael did at Isaac, although it never pursues ‘the Christian course,) we find a kind of illegitimate article, having no one to father it; and being disowned by its progenitor, it is cast upon the hospitality of the editors of the pointer, with instructions for them to take in the little foundling, or let it die unnoticed and unmourned, as they may choose; but rather than expose the author, let it die. The humane editors have adopted the little nondescript, and being highly gratified, desire more of the same brood.

ELDER JOHN CLARK ON THE OPINIONS OF MEN (CLARK) 1849

[This is the first letter or work we publish by Elder John Clarke.  He would later, after his death, be looked at as the founder of the Old Line Baptists, otherwise known in our circles as Conditionalists.  It should be made clear that whatever disagreements Clark had with Trott, Beebe, or Elder Thompson, he believed in Absolute Predestination since this was the doctrinal prospectus of the Signs dating back to 1832.  As far as we know this letter has never been published online or in print.  We publish it to give clarity to what Elder Clark believed and did not believe.  Tomorrow we will publish Beebe's response to this letter - ed.]

This controversy, between John Clark, an old-school Baptist preacher in Virginia, and Samuel Trott, would eventually cause a rift between them and those who sided with each one.  Those who wish to read. more about this may go here (although we are not sure what position the author. takes). Clark's wing would eventually lead to the Fulton Convention in Kentucky at the turn of the 20th century, which was the official beginning of "Conditionalism", even though Clark would have believed in absolute predestination - ed.

AN EXPLANATION OF THE TERMS: NATURAL & CARNAL (TROTT) 1848

BROTHER BEEBE: - Will you permit me to propose an answer for the consideration of brethren a little differing from yours on page 113 of the SIGNS for Aug.1, 1848 – to the first of Elder Goldsmith’s queries on page 115, same number. Regarding your answer to the second query, I have no objections.

This first query is, “Is it certain that natural and carnal are synonymous terms as used in the Scriptures? You give an answer according to the import of the two words as found in lexicons, but the query was in reference to the use of the terms in the Scriptures. There is this difference in this, as in some other cases. Lexicons speak of men and things as they are manifested in the world to the natural eye or human reason, the Scriptures speak of them by the revelation of God. I understand, and so I presume you do, the term carnal in its application to man as designating him as depraved."

BROTHER BEEBE: - I had formed a resolution not to controvert any subject introduced into the SIGNS unless particularly called out; and although now inclined to notice a remark of yours, I do not consider it as transgressing, in reality, that resolution, because I think it will not cause much discussion, being experimental rather than doctrinal, and because I presume the remark was made without reflection, rather than being an expression of your experience on that point. Why then notice it and again subject myself to the charge of being censorious, &c., if it is a mere mistake?

Brother Beebe: - I received, a short time since, a letter from Brother Davis S. Woody, of Missouri, in which he makes the following request:

"Dear Brother: For the satisfaction of some of my dear brethren, who I think do not understand you and brother T.P. Dudley, on the subject of the new birth or regeneration [this was a common conflation of the two terms.  In the NT the new birth is never called regeneration - ed.], I would like to have your views on that subject, and what it is that is born again. Dear brother, the reason in particular that I ask your views on this subject is that some of the brethren think that brother Dudley laid down premises which would justify the non-resurrection principle. If you see proper to give your views, I would rather have them through
the Signs."
