GENESIS 2.10 (BEEBE)
Brother Beebe: - According to your receipts, as published, you must feel the pressure of the hard times, as we also do; but I hope the Lord will sustain you, and keep you from all the delusions of the world. Please give your views on Gen. 2:10, “And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.” Now our branches come from different sources and unite in one, but it appears this river parted, but became into four heads.
Yours in hope of eternal life,
Samuel Seitz

GENESIS 2.7 (BEEBE)
DEAR BRETHREN Beebe: – My mind has been exercised for some weeks on Genesis ii. 7: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.” If not asking too much, will you give your views through the SIGNS OF THE TIMES on the above quotation, especially the latter clause? By so doing, you will greatly oblige a constant area of the SIGNS.
Yours in the hope of eternal life,
S. JORDAN. Peytona, Kentucky., Jan. 24, 1880.

GALATIANS 4.4-5 (BEEBE)
Brother Beebe: I have never troubled you for your views on any passage of scripture, but I will now ask your views on Galatians 4:4,5. There we read that Christ was made under the law to redeem those who were under the law. Now I wish to know if the church of God with all the posterity of Adam fell under the law in the same sense spoken of in the text; or whether the apostle is here only speaking of the church of God? May the Lord spare you long to wield the sword of the Lord and of Gideon, and may you never shun to declare all the counsel of God is my prayer.

GALATIANS 3.8 (BEEBE)
We read, Gal. iii. 8, “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.” My mind is perplexed by the above passage, particularly on the words, And the Scripture foreseeing that God would justify the heathen, &c. I have always taken the Scriptures to be the inspired writings of the Old and New Testaments. Daniel says in chapter x. 21, “I will show thee, that which is noted in the Scriptures of truth,” and Christ told the Jews to search the Scriptures, for in them they thought they had eternal life, and that they testified of him. Again, “This day is the Scripture fulfilled,” &c. And again, the Scripture cannot be broken. Christ died according to the Scriptures and rose again according to the Scriptures.
I could mention various other passages, where the term Scriptures is used in reference to the inspired writings, but in the passage first named, I cannot see that it refers to the Old or New Testament. You see how am difficulted? believing the Old and New Testament to be the Scriptures, how could they foresee? Or does it refer to the inspired men who wrote the Scriptures, or to the I AM, who created all things; for it is God alone who knows, governs, and foresees all things, and manages all things after the counsel of his own will. He declares the end from the beginning and known unto God are all his work from the foundation of the world. Then is it he that foresaw that he would justify the heathen through faith? When you receive this, in all probability the old year will be numbered with the things that are past, and a new year will be calling upon us to adore him who has spared us to see it.
Let me, as one of your patrons, greet you: Well done, thou good and faithful servant of the Most High God, and as you advance in age, may you grow in grace, and by faith lay hold of this promise, and enjoy its consolation. “Even to your old age I am he, and even to hoar hairs will I carry you; I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.” - Isa. xlvi. 4. And may the God of all grace, long preserve you as a watchman to root out and pull down and destroy, and to throw down error and heresy, by whatever name it may be called, and may you build up and strengthen God’s little ones in the faith of his elect.
Yours to serve,
JOEL T. HALBERT.

ETERNAL LIFE VS. TIME LIFE (BEEBE)
Our Savior has said of those people whom he calls his sheep, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them ETERNAL LIFE, and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my hand.” — John x. 27, 28. And again, the apostle says, “The gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Romans vi. 23.

EPHESIANS 6.1-5 (BEEBE)
If it is not asking too much, I will request you to give your views through the “Signs” on Ephesians 6:1-5. "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ." Who are the children and the parents there spoken of? As I have heard different views on the subject, I should be glad to have yours, and there are others in this vicinity who also desire your views on the subject.

EPHESIANS 4.13 (BEEBE)
Brother Beebe: I see in the Signs, of July 1st, 1860, that you take some exception to the use of the term soul when applied to Christ in his preexistent state. I used it as a distinctive term, not that I had any preference for that term; and it would have been better, perhaps, to have used one that was clearly Scriptural. Brother Beebe, in speaking of the character and nature of Christ, you say, “To which the Church shall be conformed when we all come unto the unity,” etc.

EPHESIANS 4.8 (BEEBE)
Note: We know that no angels are pictures in the Bible with wings. The imagery however is still powerful. |
Penn Yan, N.Y. Dec. 29, 1864. Will Elder Beebe please give his views on Ephesians 4:8?: "Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men." Who were the captives?
Your reply will oblige an enquirer after the truth.

This short story was written by Hawthorne, based on all the religious innovations of the day. It is based on the "advances" since Pilgrim's Progress. Even though we have no evidence Hawthorne was a believer, he seemed to recognize these "improvements" as somehow being wrong - ed.

GODLY SORROW WORKS REPENTANCE (BEEBE)
Brother Beebe: - As I have never troubled you much, will you give me your views on the words, “Godly sorrow worketh repentance,” etc. What is it that repents, the new man or the old man, or neither? Is the Christian constituted of three parts? The new man has nothing to repent of, and the old man will not.

GREATER WORKS 2/2 (DURAND)
At this point I will, following up on the same subject refer to the words of the dear savior in John 14.12: “Verily, verily, I see unto you, he that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also; And greater works than these shall he do; Because I go unto my father.” I have many times been asked for my understanding of this declaration, and have written briefly concerning it in private letters, and once or twice for publication. I think they are to be understood in the light of these examples of the character and work of faith referred to by Paul in the 11th chapter of Hebrews.

WONDERS DONE BY FAITH 1/2 (ELDER SILAS H. DURAND)
I woke from a troubled sleep in the midst of most peculiar terrible weeks I was not conscious of any upright, as though, like Joe, and scared dreams, terrified provisions, but as I walked my whole life seemed device spread out before as in the sight of God come and in it all, I saw nothing but sin and evil, with not one redeeming meritorious feature. I was as one brought before his king, and whose service he had been especially engaged in important matters of trust, and whom he had professed to love and honor, charged with unworthy motives and traitorous acts, which he could not deny, and yet who was himself, the most utterly surprised by his own guilt, having been unconscious of any crime, or even of any evil intent, but On the contrary who had fought he loved his king so much that it would have given his life in his service.
