JOB 19.25-27 (BEEBE)
At the request of Mrs. Elizabeth King, the only daughter of the late Mrs. Ruth Hoyt, whose obituary was published in the preceding number of this paper, we publish our views on the following portion of the scriptures. We had failed to learn that the deceased had expressed a desire that it should be preached until after her funeral. The deceased had been very much exercised in her mind some years ago, and it was believed by those who conversed with her that she had passed from death to life. The interest manifested by her in this text strengthens the hope that she felt in her declining hours the blissful assurance of hope in the living Redeemer.

JOB 15.15 (BEEBE)
BROTHER E. Moreland, of Tennessee, desires our views on Job xv. 15, viz: “Behold he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.” However correct or incorrect the declaration of this text may be, we certainly are not warranted to receive the testimony as a part of divine revelation, as that which is written by direct inspiration of God.

NO MEANS OF GRACE! (SANTAMARIA)
As astonishing as it is to think that grace is UNMERITED FAVOR sovereignly given by the Holy Spirit, it is even more astonishing that some think that if they practice certain acts, like prayer, etc., they will obtain grace. They admit that it is through and by the Spirit that this grace is obtained. They also agree that the Spirit, like the wind, goes wherever he wishes. Then how can they possibly do anything that will influence the almighty and unchangeable God to give them grace?? We are mystified by this. These men claim to believe in salvation by grace ALONE, not by any actions they perform - ed

BEING TAUGHT BY CHRIST AND BEING TAUGHT ABOUT CHRIST (SANTAMARIA)
But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: Ephesians 4.4-5 KJV
But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, Ephesians 4.16 NIV

JAMES 5.19-20 (BEEBE)
Remarks on James 5:19,20. “If any of you do err from the truth, and one converts him; let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.” Our brother T.S. Hatton, of Indiana, has requested an expression of our views on this text, especially on, “What death is spoken of?”

IS THERE NO BALM IN GILEAD? (BEEBE)
From infancy we have been in the habit of hearing this passage referred to as implying a full provision in the gospel to meet the necessities of the Lord’s people, and the Gileaditish physician has been supposed to mean the Lord Jesus Christ. That there are healing virtues in the gospel for all the complaints of God’s people, there can be no doubt, and that Christ is a great, good, and infallible Physician, is equally certain, but that the passage refers to the gospel as the balm of Gilead, and to Christ, as the Physician there, is to our mind by no means so clear.

JEREMIAH 6.16 (BEEBE)
Elder G. Beebe: - Like the woman of Canaan, I persist in troubling you for your views on a portion of the Scriptures which I see so often alluded to in the “Signs of the Times”, namely, Jeremiah 6:16: “Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is a good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.” Your compliance will much oblige. Matilda E. H. Welch. Sykesville, MD, January 6, 1862.

I JOHN 2.1-2 (BEEBE)
1 John 2.1-2 “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous: and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.”

ISAIAH 50.10-11; 51.1-2 (BEEBE)
Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyed the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God. Behold, all ye that kindles a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow. (Isaiah 50.10-11)
Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are dug. Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him. (Isaiah 51.1-2)

“Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities; thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken. But there the glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams, wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby. For the Lord is our Judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our King; he will save us.”

ISAIAH 4.1 (BEEBE)
Brother Beebe: - Please give your views on Isaiah 4:1: “And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel, only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.” Who do the women and the man represent, and what is meant by being called by his name to take away their reproach? I have been a reader of the Signs of the Times for a number of years, and this is the first time I have asked for your views on any subject. Please reply soon, and oblige.
